The challenge
Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College was the first college in England to be graded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in 2012 to 2013, and remains one of the top-performing sixth form colleges in the country.
Its senior management team asked for help to improve the culture of its meetings, and to create not only a high-performing team but a nourishing and respectful team life.
What we did
Over six months the team learned to use ProMeet tools and methods, and to understand team life as it showed up, for good and bad, in day-to-day meetings. By bringing inquiry into the daily practice of working together, team members explored and enlivened the values and behaviours they needed to become a happy, productive and respectful team.
Dialogue was central. By learning to listen to each other, members understood the impact and unintended consequences of habitual behaviours.
The subtle art of change
Change takes time and practice: the practice of listening, hearing, and being open to exploring one's own unexamined ideas and prejudices. The team was impressive before ProMeet became involved, and remarkable during our work together.
"Sean has expertly facilitated a quite fundamental change in the way we think about ourselves and the way we conduct business that is having a positive effect throughout the College and not only within the SMT. We're enormously grateful to him!"
Chris Thomson, Principal
